"LIP-STICK OR LIP-GLOSS"

Scripture: Deuteronomy 23:23

"Whatever your lips utter, you must be sure to do."

I have hyphenated these words because I want to use the suffix portion as a verb rather than a noun. The verb meaning of stick is "to keep or remain steadily or unremittingly, as to a task, undertaking, or the like". It means "to remain persistently or permanently". Gloss as a verb means "to give a false interpretation or explain away in an effort to dismiss."

God calls each of us to be people of integrity. Dr. David Jeremiah said, "Integrity is keeping my commitment even if the circumstances when I made the commitment have changed." When we do what we said, that's lip-stick. When we fail to do what we said, that's lip-gloss.

It's the difference between being dependable and undependable, reliable and unreliable, loyal and disloyal. We must pay close attention to our words. Every word we communicate (through speaking or writing) matters to God. The God who created the universe by saying words pays close attention to how we use our words. Words actually carry spiritual power within them that can either help or harm others. Jesus himself promises that when it comes time to judge people for the choices they've made in their lives, "...by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned" (Matthew 12:37). "The most attractive thing a person can do is exactly what they said they would do". That's lip-stick. Go ahead, it looks good on you.
