"LIVING BY SERVING"

Scripture  Ephesians 2:10

I did not watch the Wimbledon games this year, but I did hear news periodically as they reported on the dominance of Serena Williams. My spiritual antennas were raised when one reporter stated that "it's hard to beat an opponent who serves like that." I researched and found an article that stated "in her last three matches she faced only one break point and did not lose serve. She won 97 of 107 first serve points (91%) and hit 35 aces in those three matches. One opponent said "She is very strong, but at the same time very flexible. The combination of these two aspects enables her to dominate with [her] serve." She wins because she has perfected her serve.

While the context of her serve is different, the principle is the same. Learning to serve is the key to living a purposeful life. People often come to me searching for their purpose in life. They ask "why am I here....why was I created?" The answer is found in Ephesians 2:10, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Each of us was created to serve the rest of us. We are not living until we are serving.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said "Not everybody can be famous. But everyone can be great, because greatness is determined by service." The ills of our nation can be healed if we make serving others more important than our demands to be served.
